Comparison between DVR based CCTV system and NVR based CCTV system

Finally, let us compare both DVR-based CCTV systems and NVR-based CCTV systems with the following factors.

 1. Cost

When it comes to cost a DVR-based based CCTV system is cheaper than an NVR-based based CCTV system. This is due to the NVR being more expensive than an equal DVR and equal-quality IP cameras are expensive compared to analog cameras in a DVR system. Alternatively, you may require an additional POE switch which may be needed to purchase with additional cost.

2. Picture Quality

Picture quality is higher in an NVR system. Cameras in an NVR system produce higher-resolution pictures than a DVR system. Unlike analog cameras in a DVR system IP cameras produce digital images with digital image processing. Due to that fact, the picture quality is much higher in an NVR system.

3. Accessibility through network

Although modern DVR-based systems can be accessible limitedly through a network best option for Internet accessibility is NVR-based CCTV systems. An NVR-based CCTV system is similar to a computer network. Each camera in an NVR network has an IP address. If you have several NVRs in a system it is even possible to network each NVR and access it through the central terminal. In a DVR system, this is not possible. Remote access is easier in an NVR system too. In summary, when it comes to networking an NVR system is far more sophisticated than a DVR system which has limited networking capabilities.

4. Expandability

If we want to increase the number of cameras in a CCTV system it is easier to increase the number of an NVR system than a DVR system. Firstly you don't need separate power supplies for the cameras. Just have to wire from the NVR or POE switch to the new camera. If adding CCTV cameras to a new building in a premises or to a new floor in a building you may have to just install a new POE. Unlike DVR systems NVR does not require a direct connection between camera and NVR. If there is a computer network it's even possible to integrate cameras and NVRs into the same computer network.

5. Wiring

Wiring is easier in an NVR system because there is no need to worry about supplying power to the camera. Just have to wire the cat 5 or cat 6 cables with an RJ-45 jack between the camera and the NVR or the POE switch.

In conclusion, we can see that the NVR system is more advanced than a DVR system and superior in picture quality. Despite the cost, it is highly recommended to go for an NVR system.
